During the heyday of the grid, he was Tron, protector and guardian.
Under Clu's rule he became something else, Clu's terrifying attack dog Rinzler.
Eventually, now that things are on the mend, he may be Tron again. But for now even he isn't sure who he is, not entirely, because he remembers being both Tron and Rinzler, and the two personalities grind against each other like gears that almost fit but are missing teeth in places and occasionally send off sparks.
Not mine, just for fun. Tron and anything remotely canonical about him belongs to The Mouse.
